01/Why KhataOSFor small businesses and their accountants

Accounting that stays yours.

No subscription, no server you have to trust, no new keys to learn. Open the app and enter your first voucher.

Works offline

KhataOS is an app on your computer or phone, not a website. Your daily work needs no internet connection.

Your books stay on your device

Each company is one file on your own disk. Nothing leaves it unless you choose to share it.

Free and open source

Licensed under the AGPL. Read every line on GitHub, build it yourself, or help make it better.

Familiar shortcuts for Tally users

Voucher keys, Go To, the home menu letters. Every action has a key, and the mouse and touch work too.

A history that shows tampering

Every change is a linked entry in a chain of hashes. The trail can't be switched off, and KhataOS checks it each time a company opens.

Share without pen drives

Work over the office network, through a relay that only you and your accountant can read, or with a sealed file.

02/Built for your countryCountry packs

Tax rules for where you work.

Each country's rules live in their own pack, and each pack says plainly how far it has been tested.

Tested live

Run from start to finish against the authority's official test service.

The app makes the file or return, but it hasn't been checked with the official validator yet.

Your country next

India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and the UK are the launch markets. The other packs are less mature. Every tax rule cites an official source, and you can help check them.

Report a wrong tax rule

All figures are a preparation aid. Check them with your accountant before you file.

03/ThemesSeven themes, light and dark

A look for every desk.

Pick a theme in the app with Ctrl+K, then Theme. Every one comes in light and dark, and every one meets WCAG 2.2 AA contrast.

04/EverywhereRust inside, small on disk

One small app on every device.

KhataOS is written in Rust and uses the web view your system already has, so it ships no browser of its own. That keeps it small and quick to start. The same books and the same keys work on your computer and your phone; on a phone you get a touch layout with a drawer of function keys.

05/PrinciplesWhat we hold to

Plain rules, kept in the open.

Your data is yours

Your books live in a file on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose to share your books or send a report.

Honest about status

We say what is tested live, what isn't, and what's missing. The roadmap lists all of it.

Rules from the source

Each country's rules live in their own pack, and every tax rule cites an official source.

Built in a clean room

KhataOS reproduces the behaviour accountants rely on, like the keys and the workflow. It copies no code, text, graphics or branding; the screens are our own design, arranged around the keys Tally users know.

Readable by everyone

Every theme meets WCAG 2.2 AA contrast in light and dark, and a script checks every colour pair.

Free for good

The AGPL lets you use, study, change and share KhataOS. Anyone who runs a changed version as a service must share the changes.

Coming from Tally?

Your habits come with you. Most everyday keys work as you expect. Import your masters and vouchers from Tally's XML export, and read what works differently, and what isn't there yet, before your first week.
